@CUSoccer leaves Xavier with 1-1 draw

September 18, 2013

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Connor Gilmour scored his first career goal and Ethan Dewhurst made four saves as the Yellow Jackets came away with a 1-1 tie at Xavier.

The outcome keeps Cedarville unbeaten at 2-0-2 entering Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.

Gilmour put CU on the board first in the 20th minute. He collected the ball well outside the penalty area and ripped a left-footed 25-yarder on a hop just inside the far post.

It remained 1-0 until the 70th minute when the Musketeers, 2-3-1, finally leveled the match. That's how it stayed through two overtime periods.

"We're as pleased as we can be with a tie," remarked Interim Head Coach Brett Faro. "But, we wanted to win and we believed we could give them a game.

"Xavier is a very good team. They've made the NCAA Tournament three straight years and won their conference tournament a couple times. But, our depth and fitness were keys throughout the match and we were still creating chances in overtime. Now we need to stay focused, put Xavier behind us, and be ready to open conference play at Trevecca on Thursday."

The Jackets had the advantage in shots overall, 16-14, including 5-2 in OT. They also placed more shots on frame by a 6-5 count.

The contest was Cedarville's first against an NCAA Division I opponent since winning, 3-1, at Butler on Oct. 7, 1989.

The Yellow Jackets now have a two-game road trip to begin the G-MAC schedule. They'll be at Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. EST and at Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday at 1:00 EST.
