Action Packed Ranger Win Over UCCS

October 3, 2014

Denver, Colorado: The newly capped all-time leading goal scorer Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland) proves his offensive threats are unmatchable.  The senior forward netted a hat trick in the No. 8 Regis University Ranger men’s soccer team victory over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions.  Maybin and teammates defeated UC-Colorado Springs 3-2 in a heated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match.  “We played a very good UCCS team today,” said head coach Tony McCall.

Maybin’s scoring spree began in just the 4th minute of play when he received a short pass inside the 18-yard box from junior midfielder Ryan Urwiller (Broomsfield, Colorado) and slotted it low and on the ground into the back of the net.  The Mountain Lions responded in the 16th minute off a header from a long throw-in.

Action was not lacking in this game.  In the 28th minute Maybin connected on a cross that came from freshman forward Sawyer Lincoln (Colorado Springs, Colorado).  Lincoln played a ball across the six-yard box for Maybin to finish.  The Mountain Lions once again had an answer in the 35th minute to even the score at 2-2 heading into the break.

Play in the second half escalated with both teams battling in search of the game-winner.  Maybin struck again in the 80th minute scoring his third goal of the game which was a direct result of a corner kick build up with Urwiller recording another assist.

Ranger goalkeepers Christian Nicolosi (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington) shared minutes between the posts.  Nicolosi started the game making three saves in the first half.  Adkisson allowed no goals and made one save in the second half.  Regis outshot UCCS 14-10 with eight on target.  McCall was pleased with tonight’s winning performance, “We are getting everybody’s best shot, they are answering and showing good behavior, we are resilient.”

Not only did Maybin add three more goals to his legacy, he also became the all-time leader in points scored currently with 122 surpassing the old mark that was set at 118.  His goals move him to 49 overall thus far in his career.  “He’s a special player,” commented McCall.  Maybin now has 12 goals on the season with two assists for a total of 26 points.

Tonight’s win moves the Rangers to a win-streak of five in a row headed into a week off to rest before they travel to Colorado Mesa on Friday, October 10 at 4:30 p.m.
