Alabama Soccer Shuts Out Campbell, 4-0, Friday Night

Crimson Tide tallies three in the first half and one early in the second

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Junior Lacey Clarida and sophomore Abbie Boswell registered a pair of goals each to help lead the Alabama soccer team (3-0) to a 4-0 victory over the Campbell Fighting Camels (2-1) on Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Tonight’s win marks the second time this season that the Crimson Tide has pitched a shutout, also blanking Sam Houston State last Sunday (5-0).

Alabama improves to an overall 3-0 record with tonight’s win, marking the first time since the 2012 season the Tide has recorded three match victories to start a season.

“I think there is a genuine belief within the team that we can score goals,” said head coach Wes Hart. “Lacey and Abbie are doing a great job of putting the ball in the back of the net, and I think those two have really shown the ability, attitude and mentality to go score goals. Once we settled into tonight’s game we were okay, but the first couple minutes were shaky as we came up with a huge save early from Kat Stratton. Her save kind of sparked the team, and after that first minute or two we kind of found our way. It’s a different game if she (Stratton) doesn’t make that save early. She came up with the save when we needed it rather than having to crawl our way back from a 1-0 deficit to start the game.”

The Tide struck with an offensive attack early in the first half, as Clarida drilled a shot in the right side of the net off a cross from Boswell in the sixth minute to give Alabama an early 1-0 lead. The Crimson Tide extended its lead to 2-0 at the 16:21 minute mark, when Boswell converted her first goal of match from 10 yards out into the right side of the net. One minute later, Boswell struck again, nailing a shot from the top of the box off a cross from sophomore Emma Welch to give Alabama a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, the Tide registered one goal on eight shots. Alabama’s lone goal of the second half came at the 46:01 minute mark, when Clarida converted to result in the final score.

Alabama dominated the stat sheet leading in shots (26-5), shots on goal (10-2), assists (2-0) and corner kicks (9-2).  Stratton improves to an impressive 3-0 record between the posts this season.

“I think we had the right mentality,” said Boswell. “We just work really hard in practice and I think it paid off tonight. Our defense did really well tonight, and I think it helps a lot offensively when we pitch a shutout on defense.”

The Crimson Tide will next travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., where it will take on the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday, Aug. 28, at noon CT at Finley Soccer Stadium.
