ALBANY, N.Y. – UMBC freshman midfielder Preslie Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) put the Retrievers out in front early, but it was a hat trick from Albany’s senior forward Shayla Bergeron that ignited the Great Danes past the Retrievers, 4-1, during Sunday’s America East action on Senior Day at Turf at College Park.

UMBC concludes its 2012 campaign with a 1-11-5 overall mark and a 0-5-3 record in conference play. Albany wraps up the regular season at 6-10-2 and 3-4-1 in conference. The Great Danes solidified their spot in the America East Championship prior to the contest and will be the No. 5 or No. 6-seed.

The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead 14:34 into the contest when Quaranta dribbled through three defenders to the top of the box and ripped a shot into the left side of the net for her third goal of the season.

It took a little over five minutes for Albany to notch the equalizer, Bergeron’s first goal of the contest. Senior forward Despina Psomopoulos slide a through ball into the box and Bergeron took care of the rest, driving home her ninth goal of the year.

Two minutes and 59 seconds later, Bergeron struck again, blasting a shot into the top right corner of the net, putting the Great Danes on top 2-1.

Bergeron completed the hat trick, the second of her career, 54:53 into the contest, again getting a through ball from Psomopoulus, that found Bergeron all alone with only UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) to beat. Bergeron beat Kadet into the left corner, her 11th goal of the year, putting Albany ahead by two, 3-1.

The Great Danes added further insurance when a through ball from junior forward Aubrey VanGorder led senior midfielder Maggie DeVerna to a breakaway goal, her fifth of 2012.

Kadet finished the afternoon with four saves and wraps up the year with a 1-10-5 record in net. For the second time in three years, she concludes the season with over 100 saves. Albany freshman goalkeeper Alana Brennan made on save on the afternoon.

UMBC bids farewell to its four seniors; Aly Gazarek (Aldie, Va./Freedom/South Florida), Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), Sarah Purdum (West Fenwick Island, Del./Indian River) and Sarah Kopytko (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), who played their final career games with the Retrievers.

-Head coach Leslie Wray puts her first season with the Retrievers in the books, completing the year with a program record five saves and leading UMBC to its first win in over a season.
