ALLEN'S GOAL STANDS UP IN MONMOUTH’S 1-0 WIN OVER BOSTON UNIVERSITY

September 1, 2011

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University, ranked 25th in this week's NSCAA National Poll, registered a 1-0 victory over Boston University on The Great Lawn, on Thursday night. Behind senior RJ Allen's (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph’s) game-winner in the 14th minute, the Hawks improved to 2-0 on the year.

Allen, who was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Sunday, notched his first goal of the season, and the seventh of his career, on a 30 yard strike at 13:33, which caromed of the near post past Matt Daugherty.

"We are excited to get another win at home," stated head coach Robert McCourt. "Collectively, the guys showed tremendous commitment on both sides of the ball and in the end I felt we deserved the result."

Monmouth, which was outshot in the match 9-8 by the Terriers, who were selected as the America East preseason favorite, held an 8-3 advantage in corner kick attempts.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Blackburn (Natick, Mass./Natick), in his second start of the season, made three saves in his third career shutout, including a pair of stops on attempts from BU's Ben Berube and Stephen Knox in a two-minute span, late in the second half.

Monmouth returns to action on September 9 when the Hawks compete in the Old Dominion Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia. In the opener, MU faces No. 8 William and Mary at 4:30 and faces the host Monarchs (RV in the NSCAA poll) on September 11 at 2:30 p.m.127.0.0.1 localhost
