Another Overtime, Another Hudnut Winner

November 8, 2011

DEMOREST, Ga -- In less than a week, sophomore Matt Hudnut has gone from scoring zero times to netting two of the biggest goals for the Covenant Scots so far this season.

After coming away with a thrilling 1-0 victory, via a Hudnut goal, on Saturday night in overtime, the Scots again needed extra time and another Hudnut “golden goal” to defeat the Piedmont College Lions 2-1 on Wednesday night. The win is the second straight for the Scots who see their overall mark go to 4-6-2 and 1-0 in Great South Athletic Conference play. Piedmont drops to 5-6-2 for the season.

On Saturday, Hudnut capped off Homecoming Weekend with a goal in the 95th minute to propel the Scots over Union University. On Wednesday night, Hudnut again was the hero as he netted the game-winning goal in the 100th minute of play, his second score of the year, to give Covenant the win.

The Scots have now been a part of six overtime matches in the team’s 12 contests this year. After either tying or losing in the first four overtime matches, Covenant has put its overtime record to 2-2-2.

Covenant started off strong as Tyler Morrison gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute with his third goal of the season. After receiving a pass from Roy Anderson, Morrison played the ball nicely in the box and then finished by getting his shot past Piedmont keeper Brian Gaid.

Piedmont knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal from Justin Whitaker in the 71st minute of action. Whitaker snuck the ball into the near post and through Covenant keeper John Eger for the unassisted goal. The Lions then had a chance to go ahead late in regulation, but Mason Flynn’s shot was saved by Eger in the 88th minute to preserve the tie.

In the overtime period, Hudnut took a shot in the 91st minute but was denied by Gaid and the Lions. Piedmont’s only shot attempt in the extra time was in the 95th minute by Sidney Smith but the ball sailed wide of the net and ended the threat for the home team.

Covenant was outshot 19-14, but had the edge in shots on goal as they took 10 to Piedmont’s 6. Eger saved 5 shots for Covenant while Gaid collected 8 saves for the Lions.

The Scots will stay on the road this week as they will take on another GSAC foe in LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in LaGrange, GA. Covenant will return home on October 25 against Reinhardt University.
