Armstrong Downs UNF in Exhibition 6-2

August 17, 2016

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong State University women's soccer picked up a 6-2 exhibition victory over the University of North Florida on Sunday afternoon in its first action of the 2016 season.

Facing the Division I (and former Peach Belt Conference member) Ospreys for a second consecutive season, the two teams played three 30-minute periods and the Pirates were quick to get on the scoreboard as junior Michelle Allen's free kick deflected off the North Florida wall and into the net just six minutes in for a 1-0 lead.

Junior Amanda Green's shot in the 10th minute hit the far post and junior Jenny Allen pounced on the rebound to score her first goal of the match and give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Green then streaked down the left side and her cross was tapped along by senior Sarah Olin to junior Ashley Green, who scored in the 25th minute to stake the Pirates to the 3-0 lead.

North Florida pulled one back just before the end of the first period as Katy Mixon's shot from the left side deflected in with just two and a half minutes left in the period. At the end of the first period, the Pirates held a 3-1 lead and enjoyed an 11-2 advantage in shots.

Neither team could score in the second 30-minute period. Armstrong State had five shots, compared to four for the Ospreys.

Jenny Allen would tally her second goal of the match to open scoring in the third period, scoring on a close-range shot in the 67th minute to make the score 4-1. Freshman Ashley Lewis followed just five minutes later, converting on a turn-around shot after an Ashley Green pass at the top of the box, in the 72nd minute for the 5-1 lead.

A 50/50 ball at the midfield stripe won by North Florida resulted in a longball to the right side of the box for the Ospreys, and Angelica Stege ran onto it, scoring the second goal for the Ospreys in the 78th minute. The Pirates capped the scoring with senior Kennedi Herrmann's shot from the right edge of the box beat the keeper high in the 81st minute for the final tally.

Armstrong State outshot the Ospreys, 14-4, in the third period and overall held a 30-10 edge in shots for the exhibition match. The Pirates enjoyed five corner kicks and did not allow one to UNF in the match. Armstrong State was whistled for 13 fouls, compared to eight for the Ospreys, and the Pirates were offsides four times while UNF was offsides once.

The Pirates will have another preseason tuneup before the official 2016 season gets underway as Armstrong State will face Rollins College in a road scrimmage on Friday, August 26th, at 6 p.m.
