WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against an Air Force team receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll on Sunday afternoon at Clinton Field.

The Black Knights move to 1-1-1 after the tie, while Air Force comes away with a 1-0-2 overall record.

Both sides managed 19 shots through 110 minutes of action, with the visitors holding a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Army senior goalkeeper Winston Boldt made a career-best nine stops to record his second straight shutout and the 18th of his career. With 18 career clean sheets, Boldt stands tied for first in Academy history with Lucas Rice (USMA ’93).

Air Force sophomore Jake Schenk finished with five saves.

Air Force held a 7-4 lead in shots after the opening half, nearly breaking the 0-0 tie in the waning moments of the period. Boldt saved a hard shot from Air Force’s Scott McGillivray in the 42nd minute before Army junior Cameron Niccum blocked a follow-up attempt from Ben Kern seconds later. A final chance in the sequence saw Zach Hill send a shot over the crossbar for the Falcons.

Air Force continued to test Boldt early in the second half, including a pair of dangerous chances from senior Alex Frazier. Frazier sent a header just wide of the right post in the 51st minute before firing a second shot on target in the 55th minute that forced Boldt to make a diving save to his right side.

Army began to change the tempo about 10 minutes into the second frame, as it held an 11-3 shots advantage in the final 33:15 of regulation. Army junior Cody Guerry had Schenk beat, but sent a header wide of the Air Force’s left post after a pass from sophomore Nick Williams in the 57th minute.

Guerry remained heavily involved in Army’s attack for the majority of the second half, as, moments after his threatening header, he served a left-swinging pass across the goal mouth that senior Sean Mogan sent wide in the 63rd minute. Guerry and Mogan each registered a team-leading four shots.

Despite a furious push to bury the potential game-winning goal, Army was unable to solve Schenk in the final minutes of regulation. The Black Knights were credited with four shots in the final 6:38 of the second half to include two attempts by Mogan and one from Williams and sophomore Christian Ollen.

Mogan had the only shot on target of the first overtime period, as his 94th-minute chance was denied by Schenk.

Boldt made three saves in the second overtime to keep the game scoreless, as he stopped a strike by Air Force’s Gus Jensen in the 102nd minute before making saves on a pair of shots that came 52 seconds apart in the 105th and 106th minutes. Sophomores Ethan Spivack and Christian Clark had chances in the 109th and 110th minutes, respectively, but Schenk saved both to preserve his shutout.

Army returns to action on Wednesday when the Black Knights travel to face Binghamton at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES: With the tie, Army moves to 15-7-4 all-time against Air Force … Winston Boldt made a career-high nine saves for the Black Knights, while picking up his 18th career shutout to move into a tie with Lucas Rice (USMA ’93) for first in Academy history … the match marked the first contest against a service academy for any Army team in the 2014-15 season.
