AUBURN, Ala. – Tennessee’s Kylie Bono converted off of a free kick for the only goal of the match as the Auburn soccer team fell to the No. 25 team in the nation, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon to snap a three-match winning streak. The loss dropped Auburn’s record to 8-7-0, 4-4-0 SEC while Tennessee improved to 10-3-2, 5-2-1 SEC.

“Overall we played a good game and I thought we had better chances but Tennessee is a terrific team and they scored off of a great free kick, putting it right in the far post in the perfect spot,” Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. “They made one more play than we did. We had plenty of opportunities and we felt like we let this one get away.”

In what was a very physical match, Tennessee’s Bono capitalized on a 22-yard free kick in the 61st minute when she beat Amy Howard for her fourth goal of the season following an Auburn foul. The teams were whistled for just 18 combined fouls and only one yellow despite the physical nature of the match.

Howard, the senior goalkeeper for Auburn, made five saves in the match to give her 326 for her career, moving her into a ninth-place tie in the SEC record book with Carrie Kuhnell of Kentucky (1995-98) and two shy of Megan Rivera (2001-04) for second in Auburn history.

Three different Auburn players registered two shots each as the team fired off 10 total shots, putting two on frame. One of the most dangerous shots was Maddie Barnes’ rocket off the crossbar late in the second half as Auburn took six second-half shots. Auburn was also awarded six corner kicks but could not capitalize on any.

Auburn returns to action on Friday night at Georgia at 6pm CT in the first of four straight away contests.
