Badgers record first draw of season on unbeaten road trip

September 19, 2011

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's soccer team closed out an unbeaten two-game road trip with a 1-1 double overtime draw to the SIU Edwardsville Cougars on Sunday at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.

UW defeated Drake, 3-1, on Friday night and was able to spend Saturday supporting another UW football team in Chicago for the weekend.

"It was a great weekend," remarked head coach John Trask. "We had great results on Friday night and got to take advantage of a rare opportunity to support the football team on Saturday."

The Badgers were outshot, 4-1, by the Cougars in a quiet first half of play that ended in a 0-0 tie.

The game was all about defense until sophomore Chris Prince (Naperville, Ill.) ended the scoreless drought in the 83rd minute with a header served by junior Tomislav Zadro, (Toronto, Ontario) marking Prince's second goal of the season and putting the Badgers up 1-0 late.

The Cougars struck right back when Derek Huffman scored with a header of his own at the 85:00 mark to equalize the game at 1-1. Huffman found the goal after a throw-in and Nash Maduekwe recorded the assist.

The Badgers and Cougars played through two scoreless overtimes on their way to ending in a 1-1 draw.

"You have to give SIUE credit," said Trask. "It was a very good, hard fought game and in a critical moment we didn't come up with the stop."

After earning his first win of the season on Friday night, sophomore Max Jentsch (Hartland, Wis.) started in goal for the second consecutive game. Jentsch recorded four saves for UW, while at the other end, Scott Meyer recorded five saves in goal for the Cougars.

After recording its first draw of the season, Wisconsin is now 3-3-1, while the Cougars sport a record of 3-2-2.

The Badgers return home to open up a four-game homestand next Sunday. Their first test will be against the Lions of Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. at the McClimon Complex.
