Banes Leads Towson in 2-1 Loss to Hofstra

TOWSON, Md. - With her goal in the 52nd minute of a 2-1 loss to Hofstra, senior Emily Banes became Towson's career leader in goals.

Banes' tally came at 51:41 to open scoring. Hofstra's Sam Scolarici scored both of the Pride's (9-5-1, 3-2-1 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)) goals, both times with assists from Leah Galton.

"Our team has just battled so hard this year," noted Head Coach Greg Paynter. "It's unfortunate each game we've come up a little short on the scoreboard. But I was pleased with the effort we brought in the second half against a very good Hofstra team. For us to battle out here today, I'm just proud of what we did and the quality on the field. I'm disappointed; we certainly had a chance out there. Overall, I'm really proud of what we did."

The teams played to a scoreless draw at the half, with Hofstra holding a narrow 7-5 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes. But Towson (7-10-1, 2-6 CAA) came out of the half with energy and Banes was able to turn a heavy ball in the corner into a shot that sailed into the far upper left corner of the net. At the start of the match, she had been tied with Christi Landi ('97) for career goal total (27). She is now the sole career goal leader (28) with one match left in the season.

"She's earned that," said Paynter of Banes' career achievement. "She's had some tremendous high points in her career and some struggles. She's persevered through it. She's stubborn on the field; defenses hate playing against her. The goal she had today was first class. She worked so hard to dig the ball out of the corner and then to hit it from that angle...she's been doing that all year.

Scolarici equalized three minutes later when her shot from inside the 18-yard box sailed over Erin Quinn's outstretched hands. The teams played evenly over the next 31 minutes, but Galton dug a ball off the goal line and sent in a cross to Scolarici, who was waiting inside the six-yard box. She scored the game-winner at 85:40.

The Tigers finish their three-game homestand next Saturday, Oct. 26 against Delaware State at 2 p.m. Towson will honor its 11 seniors in a ceremony before the match.
