Bearcats beat Patriots with big second half

GREENWOOD, SC – It was a tale of two different halves for Francis Marion University in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night.  The Patriots held the previously nationally ranked Lander University Bearcats scoreless up until the 55th minute, before giving up a four goals in the second half and falling 4-0 at the Jeff May Complex. 

Despite 11 first-half shots for the Bearcats (5-2-1, 2-0), the Patriots (1-8-0, 0-3) held Lander off the scoreboard.  The Bearcats’ Clement Dauchy snapped the scoreless tie off an assist from Lewis Blissett at 54:42. Zach Acree scored in the 58th minute and Chris Hobbs burned the Patriots for the final two tallies (in the 72nd and 78th minutes). 

FMU sophomore Alex Blandin tried putting the Patriots on the board in the 75th minute, but his shot was denied by Lander goalkeeper Scott Playle.

The Patriots had two shots in the first stanza, one from freshman Igor Souza and the other from senior Cameron Mabee.

Lander outshot FMU 22-3 in the match, and took 10 corner kicks compared to two for the Patriots. 

FMU freshman keeper Nick Lucido registered a career-high nine saves, while Playle made one stop.

Francis Marion kicks off a five-match home stand when the Patriots host Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
