ST. LOUIS – Four Saint Louis seniors experienced a happy farewell to Robert R. Hermann Stadium Sunday afternoon as the Billikens defeated Temple 2-0 in an Atlantic 10 Conference match.

Seniors Maggie Baumann, Kaitlyn Doescher, Alli Reimer and Katie Walsh were honored prior to the game, which saw the Billikens (4-8-4, 2-3-2 A-10) score once in each half and register their sixth shutout of the season. Temple slipped to 5-11-2 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Saint Louis got the only goal it needed at the 36:29 mark. Jessie Jarrett directed a pass from the right flank to Jamei Borges, who fired a shot that beat Temple goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff inside the far post. The goal was Borges’ third of the season, while Jarrett picked up her first assist of the year.

Following intermission, it didn’t take long for the Bills to double their lead. Lindsay Elking delivered a perfectly flighted ball from the far right side to Maddie Gebauer in the middle, and Gebauer needed just one touch to find the back of the net at 45:58 for her third marker of the season. Elking’s assist was her third of the year. Mary Wright also picked up a helper on the play, her first of the season.

Walsh made six saves and recorded her 19th career shutout, tying Amanda Martin for second on SLU’s all-time list.

Saint Louis out-shot Temple 16-12. Seven different Billikens registered two shots apiece.

“We’re pleased with our effort, and it was great to finish our home season with a victory,” head coach Kat Mertz said. “Our girls played well collectively, and we got a spark we needed from the bench after going 110 minutes on Friday. Borges scored a great goal in the first half, and Gebauer scored a beautiful goal right at the beginning of play in the second half.

“It was an awesome job today to celebrate the seniors and what they’ve done for us, not only this season but their whole careers,” Mertz said. “They have been unbelievable for me and for the team, setting the culture and paving the way for the underclassmen and everyone to follow. They took a risk and really believed in the coaching staff and what we’re doing.

“All four of them have been tremendous leaders on and off the field. They’re great individuals, and they will be successful in their careers. I can’t wait to watch them in the future. We’re really proud of them, and we’ll miss them next year.”

The Billikens conclude the regular season on the road, taking on Charlotte Friday, Oct. 26, and George Washington Sunday, Oct. 28. SLU is 12th in the A-10 standings but still has a chance to qualify for the eight-team A-10 Championship.

“We’re looking forward to our last two games on the road,” Mertz said. “We go to Charlotte on Friday with one goal in mind, and that’s to try to get three points.”
