Billikens Overwhelm Evansville

August 23, 2011

ST. LOUIS - Sophomore Jenny Hummert (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's) scored two goals, and Saint Louis gained control with two early tallies in a 4-0 season-opening victory over Evansville Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The four goals are the most scored by SLU in a season and home opener since the Bills beat Arkansas State 6-0 in 2003.

Saint Louis wasted no time in attacking the Purple Aces (0-1-1). Senior Jasmina Suljic (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) took a pass from junior Alli Reimer (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne), dribbled down the left side and launched a shot to the left of Evansville goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison at the 1:16 mark for a 1-0 Billiken lead.

SLU made it 2-0 a little more than three minutes later. Freshman Abbey Stock (Town & Country, Mo./St. Joseph's) collected a rebound off a Harrison save and banged it home at 4:25.

Hummert netted her first goal at 24:30. She gathered a pass from freshman Mallorie Owens (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Charles Lutheran) and fired it from eight yards for a 3-0 Saint Louis lead, and the Bills took that cushion to intermission.

Hummert tacked on her second goal at 82:45, carrying the ball from distance and chipping a shot over Harrison from 16 yards. An assist was credited to freshman Julia Merlo (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu).

The Billikens outshot the Aces 11-1. Junior goalkeeper Katie Walsh (Chesterfield, Mo./Whitfield) was not forced to make a save as the SLU defense prevented Evansville from directing a shot on frame. The Bills earned a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Saint Louis heads to Milwaukee next weekend for two games. The Billikens face No. 14 Marquette Friday, Aug. 26, at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m.
