Billikens Top Akron, 2-0

August 24, 2013

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis Billikens sophomore defender Tyler David scored early in the first half, and junior Josh Kohring tacked on a late insurance marker as the No. 10 Billikens held off the No. 8 Akron Zips 2-0 Saturday night in a men’s soccer exhibition match at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

“I thought it was a good game against two great teams,” SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. “We did what we needed to do to win, but there are certainly things we need to work on.”

David put the Billikens on the board in the eighth minute off a set piece. Alex Sweetin sent in a ball off a free kick, and Julian Gieseke got a piece of it before it trickled to David stationed at the far post. David redirected the ball off his right leg and into the back of the net for the game’s first goal.

SLU kept Akron off the scoreboard thanks to one first-half save by Nick Shackelford and three second-half saves by David Andre. Late in the game, David cleared a ball off the line after Andre was out of position to keep the shutout intact.

Kohring notched an insurance goal in the 88th minute. Kristo made a quick touch to William Hidalgo, who found Kohring who raced up the left flank. Kohring buried one past the Akron keeper, and the Billikens hung on for the 2-0 victory.

SLU opens the regular season Friday, Aug. 30, against Oral Roberts at Hermann Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
