ST. LOUIS – Denver’s Katy Van Lieshout scored in the 89th minute to lift the visiting Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis Friday afternoon at a soggy Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Van Lieshout collected a deflection and fired a shot from eight yards away that found the target at the 88:53 mark. The goal was her first of the season.

Saint Louis (1-2-1) out-shot Denver (3-1-1) 3-2 in the first half, but the Pioneers posted a 12-4 advantage in the second stanza to finish with a 14-7 edge for the game. Six of SLU senior goalkeeper Katie Walsh’s (Chesterfield, Mo./Whitfield) seven saves came after intermission. Denver’s Lara Campbell stopped all three of the Billikens’ shots on frame.

“It’s disappointing to lose in the last minute of the game, but give Denver credit,” head coach Kat Mertz said. “They played really well, especially in the second half, and caught us on our heels.

“It would have been nice to have gotten the game into overtime, because I thought we actually were putting some things together at the end,” Mertz said. “We were trying to play the ball in behind and use the sloppy field to our advantage. Our girls did well, and we had some good moments of moving the ball around.”

The Billikens travel to Kansas City next weekend to play in a tournament hosted by UMKC. SLU takes on the host Kangaroos Friday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a meeting with Florida Gulf Coast Sunday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m.
