Bischoff And Battista Give Wagner 2-2 Draw

September 10, 2017

New Rochelle, NY – Goals goals by juniors Kristen Bischoff (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) and Sandra Battista (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy)  combined with a tight defense led by sophomore Delaney Beck's (Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) eight saves helped the Wagner College women's soccer team earn a 2-2 tie at Iona on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks started out the first half on defense as Iona was able to fire off multiple shots, none of which were a real danger for Beck between the posts.

Wagner's first scoring opportunity came after a corner kick 10 minutes into play when freshman Taylor Wasserman (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison) headed the ball towards net, but was unable to get it across the goal line, as the Green and White started to move the ball into Iona territory more consistently.

Roughly 22 minutes into the contest, the Seahawks capitalized on their next opportunity, as an interception deep in Iona territory gave the ball to sophomore Kaitlyn Ross (Sayville, NY / Sayville), who fed a perfectly-timed through ball to Bischoff. The forward stayed calm in front of the net and smartly put the ball into the bottom-right corner, giving Wagner a 1-0 advantage.

With the opening period winding down Beck faced her toughest challenge of the half, coming up with a save on an Iona free kick from opportunity from just outside the box which preserved the Seahawk lead going into the half.

Starting the second period, Ross had the first opportunity for the Seahawks, but Tiffany Martinez in goal for the Gaels made an excellent save to prevent Wagner from doubling its lead.

The next 30 minutes, however, saw the Green and White backed up, as Iona continuously pressured the Seahawk defense. Beck was forced to make a number of excellent saves, including back-to-back stops following a free kick 63 minutes into the contest as well as a save on a long-range shot three minutes later.

The Gaels forged a 1-1 tie 76 minutes into the game on a shot by Jaque Rice, but the Seahawks answered quickly. With seven minutes to play in regulation, freshman Le'la Allen (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) passed the ball to Battista, who made a defender miss and gave the Green and White a 2-1 lead.

With time running out in regulation, the Gaels tied the score once again, as Erika Flowers converted on a direct free kick to send the contest to overtime.

In the extra period, neither team managed to have bigger scoring opportunities, ending the game in the Seahawks' second tie of the year.

The Gaels outshot Wagner 26-12 on the afternoon, as Bischoff led the Green and White with three attempts.

The Seahawks will be back in action next Friday, September 15, when they take on NJIT at Hameline Field in at 7:00 pm. start.
