Bison Women's Soccer Win Streak Halted by Saint Francis (Pa.), 2-1

September 17, 2011
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell freshman Cassie Denger (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) scored her first career goal, but it was not quite enough as the Bison fell 2-1 to Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday at Emmitt Field, ending their two-game winning streak. Tesa McKibben and Barbara Maros de Carvalho scored for the Red Flash, who improved to 4-4 on the season, while Bucknell fell to 2-4. The opening 45 minutes did not produce a goal, despite 20 combined shots and good end-to-end action. Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) made a great diving save to rob McKibben eight minutes into the game, and later in the half she came out to contest McKibben 1v1 and a forced a wide shot. Bucknell had two great chances in the first half, the first coming on a corner kick in the 11th minute. Corinne Collins (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) was wide open in the box, but her header went right into the mitts of Red Flash keeper Brianna Butcher. Not quite four minutes later, Chelsey Garkowski (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) made a great play to keep the ball alive in the right corner, then broke in along the end line before slipping a pass to Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union Endicott) in front, but Butcher made a fine sliding save. Saint Francis broke through just 2:06 into the second half, when Maros de Carvalho sent in a cross from the right side that McKibben volleyed out of the air into the right side of the net for her fifth goal of the year. McDermott made another diving save to stop a header from Aryn Askin in the 51st minute, keeping the score 1-0, but the Red Flash posted an insurance marker in the 74th. This time the play built up from the left flank as Codi Bixler sent Ellie Gavin forward, and Gavin’s cross into the six-yard box was redirected in by a sliding Maros de Carvalho. Bucknell pulled within one with 6:35 remaining, as Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) tapped a pass over to Denger at the left side of the penalty area, and Denger finished with a beautiful shot to the upper right corner. In the final five minutes the Bison sent a couple of dangerous balls into the box but nothing came of them. Bucknell had one last chance after a Saint Francis foul near midfield with 11 seconds left, but McDermott’s free kick was broken up. Saint Francis finished with a 22-16 shot advantage, while Bucknell had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. McDermott logged seven saves for the second straight game, while Butcher had six for the Red Flash. The Bison are home again on Tuesday night against Penn State at 7 p.m. That game can also be seen live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com.
