HAMDEN, Conn. – The Army men’s soccer team played into double overtime for the second game in a row, this time settling for a 0-0 draw against regionally ranked Quinnipiac on Wednesday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field. After the result, the Black Knights move to 5-0-1, while the Bobcats, who are tied for 10th in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Atlantic Region poll, are now 1-2-3.

With the clean sheet, the Black Knights set a program record for their sixth consecutive shutout. Army had previously recorded five straight shutouts in 1930, 1931 and 1973. The Black Knights also stand alone as the only team in the nation that has yet to surrender a goal.

Junior goalkeeper Winston Boldt tied his season high with five stops for Army, while bringing his career high for shutouts in a season to six.

“I thought it was an exciting, competitive game,” said men’s soccer head coach Russell Payne. “Both teams had a lot of chances and I’m really proud of our guys to continue to find a way to get results. This is a positive to come on the road for an afternoon game during the week against a team like Quinnipiac.”

Quinnipiac junior goalie Borja Angoitia made 10 saves in his sixth start of the season.

The hosts held a 6-3 advantage in shots after the first half while each team had one on target. Boldt stopped junior Raphael Carvalho’s strike in the 34th minute, and sophomore forward Cody Guerry’s attempt for Army was saved by Angoitia just 54 seconds later. The first five of Army’s second half shots came on goal, but the Black Knights were unable to beat Angoitia and the Bobcats’ back row. Boldt turned away the only Quinnipiac shot on target of the period during the 51st minute.

After making two saves in all of regulation, Boldt stopped a pair of Bobcat shots during a 1:55 stretch early in the first overtime period as the match remained deadlocked at 0-0. Quinnipiac manufactured two threatening chances in the 105th minute of the second overtime, with senior Simon Hinde’s initial attempt sailing just wide before freshman James Doig’s follow-up was denied by Boldt.

“Winston has kept us in every game and this was probably the most involved he’s had to be all season,” said Payne about Boldt’s timely stops during the first and second overtime periods.

Senior midfielder Jason Lewis created an opportunity in 108th minute, but his shot was stopped by Angoitia at the left post. Neither team had an attempt in the final 2:24 of the period.

Army returns home on Sunday, Sept. 22, when it welcomes Houston Baptist to Clinton Field. The first-ever meeting between the Black Knights and the Huskies is scheduled for 1 p.m.
