Bobcat Soccer Slips at Flagler, 5-0

October 29, 2011

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. With improvement in their Peach Belt Conference (PBC) playoff seeding on the line, the Georgia College soccer team (5-13, 4-6 PBC) was blanked by Flagler College (9-7-1, 5-4-1 PBC) Saturday 5-0.

Two goals each by Flagler's Loren Cate and Lindsay Zullo helped send the Saints past the Bobcats. The Bobcats battled the Saints on Flagler's turf, reaching the halftime horn tied 0-0.

Zullo started the barrage just 38 seconds into the second half off a pass from Cate. A 2-0 lead came just 10 minutes later, as Zullo netted another, this time off a Jessica Jagelski pass. Zullo has now tallied eight goals on the season.

In the 74th minute, Cate knocked one off the underside of the crossbar for a 3-0 advantage. She nabbed another with just under 14 minutes left as Cate hooked up with Zullo for the former's 13th goal of the season.

The fifth and final strike came with five minutes left, as Taylor Adkins finished on her own individual effort for season goal number three.

Freshman Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) played the full 90 minutes in net, tallying seven saves, the most in her young career. Her counterpart, Cristina Coca made five stops for the shutout.

All told, the Bobcats were out-shot 27-16, including a 12-5 deficit in shots on goal. GC did however win the corners battle 4-1. Junior Jamie Colcord (Marietta, Ga.) and senior Karen Bonilla (Manassas, Va.) led the team in shots with three each.

The loss keeps GC at eighth place in the PBC standings, the final slot to make the 2011 Peach Belt Tournament. GC will have to travel to top-seed and national No. 18 Armstrong (12-2-3, 9-0-1 PBC). The Pirates clinched the regular-season title by tying No. 11 North Georgia today. The Bobcats and Pirates met in the regular season Oct. 19, a 1-0 win for Armstrong.

GC will be back in action Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Armstrong in Savannah, Ga. with more details to come.
