DAYTON, Ohio – Ohio Soccer began its 2012 season at Wright State on Friday evening, falling by a final score of 1-0 to the Raiders. The Bobcats played a strong match but were ultimately beaten by an 87th-minute goal from Emilie Fillion just as it seemed the match was destined for extra time.

The match was an entertaining offensive contest, with the two teams combining for 20 total shots, ten of which were on target. Wright State (1-0) held a 12-8 edge in shots while the Bobcats (0-1) showed good discipline in only committing two fouls throughout the entire 90 minutes.

“I thought it was a well-fought game,” said Head Coach Stacy Strauss. “Wright State is a very good team. I thought at times we moved the ball around pretty well. We need to be a bit more dangerous and just recognize where the space is a bit better.”

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with each team having good spells of possession. Ohio looked particularly dangerous during the middle stages of the half, as Cathryn Rogers (Etobicoke, Ontario) and Veronica Rock (North Royalton, Ohio) each had good looks at the goal which were sent just high. Maggie Murnane (Libertyville, Ill.) had Ohio’s best chance of the half, taking a touch to create space before sending in a left-footed curling shot from 20 yards out.

Wright State was not without opportunities of its own in the first half, however. Ini Umotong, a tall forward for the Raiders, proved to be a handful. The junior from Birmingham, England had a few good attempts for the home side, coming closest with a hard shot on goal from close range in the waning moments of the first half. Mattie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio) was in good position for the shot and made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.

Particularly impressive in the first half was the performance of freshmen Grace Campbell (Wadsworth, Ohio), Sasha Haverchak (Akron, Ohio) and Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio). Each of these three Bobcats made the starting eleven in their regular-season Ohio debuts on Friday evening.

Wright State pressed hard during the opening minutes of the second frame, testing the Bobcat back line on numerous occasions. Ohio’s defense remained organized and was able to absorb this early pressure without conceding.

Ohio nearly scored a decisive tally in the 80th minute when Erin Schwenke (Solon, Ohio) blasted a hard shot towards the net. With WSU goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy off her line, a Raider defender made a very impressive goal line clearance to keep the match level at 0-0.

The host Raiders found the back of the net in the 87th minute when Fillion was able to strike a bouncing ball past Liston from ten yards out. Fillion’s goal was assisted by teammates Natalie Sedlock and Kalee Thompson.

The Bobcats will next be in action on Sunday, Aug. 19 at Indiana. Ohio will kick off against the Hoosiers at 2 p.m.

Goals:
WSU – Emilie Fillion 1 (Natalie Sedlock 1, Kalee Thompson 1) 87’

Ohio Starting XI (Numerically): Mattie Liston (GK), Maggie Murnane, Cathryn Rogers, Paige Howard, Veronica Rock, Sasha Haverchak, Erin Schwenke, Natalie Bechtel, Holly Harris, Gabby Hausfeld, Grace Campbell
