WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (www.purduesports.com) – One day after her 20th birthday, Dannah Williams scored her first collegiate goal late in the game to lift Purdue women’s soccer to a 1-0 victory vs. Maryland on Thursday at Folk Field.

The Boilermakers (4-10, 2-6 B1G) snapped their six-game losing skid with their second shutout win of the season. It was Purdue’s first 1-0 win since defeating Evansville at home during Labor Day Weekend of last season, but first in Big Ten play since October 2013 vs. Northwestern.

Williams finished off a corner kick scramble in the 79th minute, capitalizing on a rebound that was a byproduct of UMD goalkeeper Rachel Egyed punching out Andrea Petrina’s initial service from the corner. Coincidentally, there were only a combined four corner kicks in the game, the fewest in any of the Boilermakers’ 14 games this year.

Williams joined Gianna Milaro and Vanessa Korolas as Purdue players to score their first collegiate goals this season, all coming in Big Ten games. The 2011 season opener at Toledo marked the last time the Boilermakers won in 1-0 fashion via a player’s first collegiate goal. Alex Hairston was the goal scorer that day.

Goalkeeper Jordan Ginther finished with three saves while earning her fourth career solo shutout. Maddy Duncan, Megan Kaser and Hannah Mussallem all went the distance along with Williams on the Purdue back line. Head coach Drew Roff and Williams both highlighted the play of Duncan at left back after the game.

Vanessa Korolas was Purdue’s most active offensive player throughout the second half. She helped set up scoring chances for Petrina, Brady Riley and Dagny Olson before the Boilermakers finally broke through with the corner kick goal.

Maryland (3-12-1, 1-7 B1G) benefitted from a no-call as an unmarked Petrina was tripped up slightly as she set up to shoot inside the 18-yard box in the 55th minute. Korolas set up the opportunity for her fellow countrywoman with a left-to-right cross to the top of the box. Egyed used a full extension dive to her right to snare a shot by Petrina a little over a minute later.

Riley missed high from the top of the six-yard box in the 58th minute after Korolas connected a right-to-left cross to the freshman. In the 76th minute, Korolas worked her way through the right side of the 18-yard box but opted to play back pass to Olson rather than shoot as she neared the right post. Olson did shoot, forcing Egyed to make a diving punch save at the right post.

Ginther’s best save of the night was at the top of the 68th minute, a diving stop at the right post on a shot by Jlon Flippens that deflected off a Purdue defender but remained on frame.

The Terrapins were shut out for the third straight game after scoring 21 goals over their first 13 games.

Purdue returns to action Sunday for its final road date of the regular season, a 1 p.m. game at No. 16 Penn State. It will mark the first time the Boilermakers have ever played a defending national champion.
