BRONX, N.Y. – For the second straight game, the St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team (3-8-1, 0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) was unable to find the back of the net as Fordham (6-6, 2-0 A-10) shut out the Bonnies on the road, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Jack Coffey Field.

Fordham scored midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead and then added an insurance tally late in the game to send the Bonnies to their first 0-2 start in A-10 play since the 2008 season.

“We didn’t come to compete today,” head coach Manoj Khettry said bluntly. “Fordham wanted to win more than we did, and it showed. A number of our players had good performances but not enough to make a difference. We need more players to step up and compete if we want to return to the A-10 Championship.”

The Rams jumped on the board with a Kristina Maksuti goal in the 23rd minute. Maksuti’s first shot rattled off the crossbar, but the sophomore collected her own miss and delivered her team-leading fourth goal of the campaign. Fordham’s insurance came in the 83rd minute when Cara Rooney curled a shot just inside the far post from about 16 yards out.

Rooney’s strike came just minutes after Katie Kerkman entered the Bonaventure net in place of injured starting keeper Megan Junker. Junker finished with two saves in 71 minutes of action, while Kerkman did not record a stop in her 19 minutes between the pipes.

Fordham was more efficient with its attempts on goal, but the Bonnies and Rams both put four shots on net. Freshman Abby Maiello and sophomore Caitlin MacConnell (pictured) each attempted two shots on frame for the Bonnies, with Maiello taking a team-leading four shots in total.

St. Bonaventure will look to bounce back from a pair of conference-opening road losses next weekend when it commences its home A-10 action. The Bonnies will face Temple on Friday at 3 p.m. before turning around and battling fellow Philly school Saint Joseph’s on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Maksuti nearly added another tally in the opening minute of the second half, but she hit the post … Fordham earned five corner kicks while the Bonnies produced four … Bonaventure was whistled for nine fouls compared with Fordham’s two … sophomore Brittany Charles attempted two shots for the Bonnies, while freshman Stephanie Jenkins attempted the other … the Rams were called for offsides seven times while SBU was not whistled once.
