The San Diego State women's soccer team used two goals early in the second half to register a 2-0 victory over Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. The match was the second of five consecutive home contests to start the season for the Aztecs, who improved to 2-0. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2.

Both teams were unable to find the back of the net in first half, but SDSU dominated all facets of the first 45 minutes as it notched six shots in the period and held the advantage in corner kicks (3-0). ASU, meanwhile, tallied one shot in the 14th minute, but was unable to notch another until the second half.

SDSU’s first two shots of the contest came from Kelsey Booth in the 15th and 16th minute. The sophomore nearly connected, but had both of her attempts sail high. In the 22nd minute, Sarah Halverson added a shot as the senior also missed high.

It was then a back and forth until the Aztecs picked up the intensity in the final three minutes. Senior Kim Carcich tallied a shot in the 43rd minute, but had it blocked. A few seconds later, redshirt senior Tiffany Hurst’s attempt went just left. SDSU had another opportunity a minute later, but sophomore Mariah Helmer was unable to connect as her shot also went left to close out the first half of play.

In the second period, SDSU continued with the same offensive intensity from late in the first half as Booth attempted a shot just two minutes in. The attempt was blocked, but Booth got the ball back and connected from six yards out to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.

San Diego State wasn’t done, as Halverson came through for the Aztecs just seven minutes later. She sent a ball to Booth, who passed it to Haley Locker and the sophomore tallied a goal to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Sun Devils kept at it as the second half progressed, but they were unable to connect on any of their six shot attempts as goalkeeper Rachel Boaz held her ground and notched four saves in the process. It was the redshirt sophomore’s second consecutive shutout victory as she improved to 2-0 on the year.

At the end of the day, the Aztecs held a 13-7 edge in shots while the Sun Devils had the advantage in corner kicks (6-4). SDSU, however, won possession battle by a 60-40 margin.

The Aztecs will now prepare for St. Francis (PA) on Wednesday. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for a 7 p.m. PT start at the SDSU Sports Deck.
