Bosnyak gives #Seawolves win over Bearcats

October 12, 2014

Stony Brook, N.Y. - After seeing the victory slip through their grasps in the last minute of regulation, the resilient #Seawolves received a goal from redshirt junior Regan Bosnyak (West Hartford, Conn.) with 2:35 remaining in the final overtime to earn three critical points in America East play on Sunday. Sophomore Leah Yurko (Cumberland, Md.) scored a goal for Stony Brook, while senior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) pitched in with two assists.

Ryan's Reaction

"I'm proud of my team because we persevered, we stuck with it and we were good in the overtimes," said Ryan. "The fact that my two captains, in an overtime, must win game at home, were the ones who connected for the goal says a lot about our leadership and a lot about our captains."

Goal Recaps

  • Yurko put Stony Brook ahead in the 64th minute when she received a pass from Grogan, beat a defender, and placed a perfect shot off the inside of the far post and over the goal line.
  • The #Seawolves were 17 seconds away from wrapping up the victory but Rebecca Raber put a halt to their celebration, turning and launching a shot from 30 yards out that found the top corner.
  • The game-winning goal stemmed from a perfectly worked set piece. Junior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, NY.) rolled a ball to an overlapping Grogan who laced a cross across the six yard box that was headed home by a diving Bosnyak.

Notes

  • With the victory the #Seawolves improved to 2-0-1 in overtime games this season. Redshirt sophomore Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.)  scored an overtime goal in Stony Brook's victory over Fordham.
  • Redshirt senior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) recorded a season-high 11 saves to notch her fourth victory of the season.
  • Yurko came off the bench to lead Stony Brook in shots with three and shots on goal with two.
  • The Bearcats led in shots 27-13 and shots on goal 12-8.
  • Devereaux's sixth assist of the season moved her back into a tie-for-second in the America East. She is one shy of her career-high, which she set as a freshman.
