Newton, MA (Friday, August 27, 2010) – The Boston College women’s soccer team improved to 1-0-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over Hofstra this afternoon at the Newton Soccer Field.
The Eagles scored four first half goals, with senior defender Hannah Cerrone opening up the gates just 1:55 into the match. BC set up a give-and-go off a corner kick which sprung Cerrone into the box alone. She launched a shot from inside the 18 yard box into the far post for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
BC went up 2-0 when Natalie Crutchfield sprinted downfield and sent a through ball to the near post to sophomore Maddie Payne. Payne’s one-touch pass landed on the foot of Amy Caldwell on the weak side and the senior forward one-timed the ball by the Hofstra keeper in the ninth minute. Sophomore Victoria DiMartino gave BC a 3-0 lead in the 18th minute on a left-footed
shot to the far left of the goalkeeper. Freshman Mary Gibson Wagner finished the scoring in the first half on a header with six minutes left in the half.
The second half, Stephanie Wirth almost gave BC a five goal lead when her header off across from Caldwell hit the crossbar just three minutes into the second half. BC did strike in the 64th minute when defender Alyssa Pember redirected a corner kick from Cerrone into the far post for 5-0 lead.
