DENVER – Freshman Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored a pair of goals on his debut to lead the University of Denver men’s soccer team to a 4-0 opening night victory over Bakersfield on Saturday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

With the win on Saturday night, Denver extended its home winning streak to 18 matches and its home unbeaten streak to 20, both of which are the longest active streaks in the nation.

Shinyashiki took 11:35 to open his collegiate scoring account, turning his defender on the spot, and finishing into the side netting. Redshirt-junior Chandler Crosswait (Bedford, Texas) kept the ball for the Pioneers down the right touchline in the build-up, before feeding the run just outside the box to classmate Reagan Dunk (Dallas, Texas), who took three touches before finding Shinyashiki just to the right of the penalty spot. Shinyashiki turned his defender and finished into the side netting to give Denver the 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute.

Senior captain Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.) forced a Bakersfield own goal 12 minutes later to double the Pioneers advantage. The crafty Seattle Sounder Academy product dribbled through a pair of defenders before playing a dangerous ball across the face of goal, a cross that deflected off the feet of Mario Iniguez into the roof of the net.

Shinyashiki completed his brace in his first career match with a diving header off the cross from sophomore Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.). The second year Pioneer got down the left side, feeding a cross into the path of Shinyashiki inside the middle of the area.

Sophomore Cole Stevenson (Leawood, Kan.) made it 4-0 in the 87th minute on an assist from centerback Kortne Ford (Greeley, Colo.). The Colorado Rapids academy product played a long ball from just outside his own 18 over the Bakersfield backline to the run of Stevenson. Finishing 1v1 with the keeper, Stevenson slotted his finish to the right.

Denver had five players make their Pioneer debut in the starting lineup on Saturday night, including four freshmen.

UNC Asheville transfer keeper Dan Jackson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was called upon for just two saves in first cleansheet as a Pioneer. The shutout is the fifth of the senior’s career. The Pioneers have not allowed a goal in any of their four matches this fall (first three preseason).
