Bromson's Overtime Goal Gives Women's Soccer Win Over Rensselaer

ROCHESTER, NY -- Sophomore Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season with 5:50 remaining in overtime to lift the RIT women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Rensselaer in Liberty League action from RIT Field on Friday. The win improves the Tigers to 4-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Liberty League. The Engineers drop to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Liberty League.

RIT had a scoring chance two minutes into the contest. Senior Kimi Sisti (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads)  dribbled down the flank sending a service into the box. Freshman Jamie Lewandowski headed the ball to Ashlene Potter (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) who fired a shot that Rensselaer goalkeeper Stephanie Vargas dove to save. Bromson sent the rebound just wide.

Rensselaer generated a good chance later in the half when Taylor Korytko sent a hard shot just wide of the post.

Lewandowski had a great chance midway through the first half when her shot off a drop-back pass from Bromson just missed the cross-bar.

Rensselaer generated three very good chances off corner kicks late in the openeing half. Rachel Tietzen's volley off a corner kick just sailed wide of the net. Korytko and Sandy Kirk had two shots saved off a corner by RIT goalkeeper Ashley Valenti on a scrum inside the RIT penalty area.

The Engineers kept the momentum early in the second half, but Valenti made the save off a shot from Tietzen.

The Tigers got it going when freshman Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) cut a ball back around her defender and sent a cross to Bromson, but the Engineer defender marking Bromson just got her foot in to deflect the ball out of harms way.

With 3:25 to play, Lewandowski received a ball in the the box. She turned and fired a shot that again, just missed the cross-bar.

In the overtime, RIT won a corner. Lewandowski sent the ball into the area. The ball came right to Sisti who spotted Bromson open in the box and fed her a pass right to her feet. Bromson turned and fired a shot into the upper right corner to give the Tigers the win and even their record in the Liberty League.

Rensselaer held a 12-8 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Valenti picked up the win for the Tigers and her second shut out of the season allowing no goals and making two saves. Stephanie Vargas took the loss, making two saves.

RIT will host #24 Skidmore College tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm in Liberty League action from RIT Field.
