BU women beat Albany, win America East

October 22, 2010
BOSTON - Backed by goals from graduate student Lisa Kevorkian and junior Tiya Gallegos, the Boston University women’s soccer team (13-5-0, 7-0-0 AE) claimed the America East regular season title outright on Thursday night when it defeated Albany (8-7-2, 3-2-2 AE), 2-0, at Nickerson Field.

With the victory, BU won its 10th straight contest to break a program record for consecutive wins, while also tying a team record for shutouts in a season (12). The Terriers have also stretched their shutout streak to 918:02 minutes and 10 games, which is one of the longest streaks in NCAA history as they are now tied with six schools for sixth place.

Kevorkian scored the game-winner in the 41st minute when BU was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball inside the 18-yard box was called. The Arcadia, Calif. native stepped up to take the kick and buried it into the netting for her 13th goal of the season.

It would be another 46 minutes before BU would add to its lead, and Gallegos came through to give BU some insurance with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Kevorkian lobbed a pass across the box to junior Jessica Luscinski, who then headed it over to Gallegos. Gallegos collected the pass and then unleashed a strike to the far left side from just inside 25 yards for her sixth goal of the season.

The Terriers have one remaining regular season game against Maine on Sunday (Oct. 24) at 1 p.m. on Nickerson Field. After that, they have earned a first-round bye in the 2010 America East Women’s Soccer Championship and will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 31) when they host an AE semifinal game at Nickerson Field.

NOTES: Kevorkian now has 13 goals and 30 points in 2010, which places her third for both single-season goals and points, respectively. With the assist, Luscinski moved into a tie with former teammate Emily Pallotta (‘10) for ninth place among BU’s all-time scoring leaders with 48 points.
