MOREGA, Calif.--Bucknell (6-3) defeated CSU Bakersfield (2-6-1) 3-1 Friday afternoon in the first match of the Saint Mary’s Tournament.

The Bison took a 1-0 when Chelsey Garkowski scored at the 4:38 mark of the first half. Bucknell struck for two goals in a five-minute span to take control of the match in the second half. Sam Peña (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield, Calif.) scored at 79:25 from a Daisy Vazquez (R-Sr., Redwood City, Woodside HS) pass.

The Roadrunners outshot the Bison 22-8 (9-3 on goal) and posted seven corner kicks compared to two for Bucknell.

“We have been creating fantastic opportunities throughout our season but struggle to put away our chances,” said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. “We need to adapt the way we attack so that we are less susceptible at the back and giving up easy look on our goal. I am proud of the way this team fought in the second half. We will continue working to move forward.”

The Roadrunners face UC Davis in the second match of the tournament Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
