MONTEVALLO, Ala.—The Barry Buccaneers suffered full-moon fever on Friday and dropped their season opener to the Montevallo Falcons 2-1 at UM’s Varsity Field.

Emma Karp scored the lone tally in the 69th minute with an assist from Chelsea Stoeckigt. Stoeckigt’s pass from the left wing from Karp at the top of the penalty box and Karp drilled the ball past Kaitlin Thomas in the Falcon goal.

The Buccaneers (0-1-0) out-played the Falcons (1-0-0) for the majority of the game, but Jade Pennock found the back of the net twice in a minute and a half in the second period and the Bucs could not overcome the deficit.

Pennock scored the first goal after a corner by Paige Scott in the 64th minute and forced a take-away in the back to score the game-winner in the 65th.

Both teams had chances in the first half. UM’s Nicole Johnston hit the crossbar in the 19th minute and in the 31st minute, Barry’s Lavinia Nkomo got the ball past Thomas, but Rebecca Dowling was there to sweep the ball off the line.

Thomas had three saves for the Falcons, while Barry’s Becca Rogers had two.

The Bucs take on the North Alabama Lions on Sunday at 4:00 pm Central Time in Florence, Ala.
