CHICAGO – The Loyola men’s soccer team fell to 0-2 in the Horizon League (1-7-1 overall) after it suffered a 3-1 heartbreaking defeat to Butler tonight at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers dominated the first half, playing a game of possession and aggression to keep Butler on the defensive, but were unable to overcome the opposing momentum after the Bulldogs scored the equalizer in the second.

James Howe scored his first goal of the season at the 22:38 minute mark when he found open space to travel the ball from the midfield, launch a shot from 18 yards out, and give Loyola the 1-0 lead.

In the 52nd minute, Butler scored the goal that sparked the fire to switch the momentum and start the comeback.  Adekunle Oluyedun notched the leveler after evading a keeper challenge in the upper left of the box. Twelve minutes later, the Bulldogs took the lead after a corner kick set up the score for Blake Leyden.

At the 65:19 mark, Jesse Miser scored the final goal of the match when Butler was granted a penalty kick from about 20 yards out. Leyden curved a pass to the left side for the easy put-away.

Freshman Brian Bement led the Ramblers with three shots in the match. Howe tallied two shots, including the opening goal. Reed Patterson and Eric Marofske notched two shots each in the match while Justin Koehler added the final shot to the team total.

Christian Krueger earned the start at goalkeeper and collected four saves, all within the second half. He falls to a 1-3-0 record after the loss. Butler finished with the 15-10 advantage in shots while the teams split-even in corner kicks, 6-6

The Ramblers take a break from conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 5 to host the Oakland Grizzlies at 7:00 p.m. CST.
