SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly men’s soccer team matched a program record by holding an opponent to just three shot attempts for the second-straight match, but the Mustangs – despite producing 16 attempts of their own and threatening New Mexico’s net multiple times early in the second half – settled for a scoreless draw against the Lobos at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Friday evening.

Junior forward Dakota Collins produced a match-high four shot attempts for Cal Poly (1-0-1), which furthered its unbeaten run at Spanos Stadium to eight-straight contents. Cal Poly continues its five-match home stand on Sunday, Sept. 4 versus Seattle at 1 p.m.

Both sides were held without a shot through the opening 22 minutes until New Mexico senior midfielder Michael Green saw his attempt blocked.

Cal Poly’s first serious scoring threat occurred in the 28th minute as senior midfielder Kyle Montgomery slalomed his way through the New Mexico backline before seeing a shot attempt turned away by Lobos junior goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez.

Held to just four shot attempts during the first 45 minutes, Cal Poly opened the second half by producing a flurry of scoring opportunities. Collins sparked the Mustangs just two minutes into the second half, ripping a shot from 20 yards that was caught by Rodriguez. Collins fired wide a minute later before sophomore forward Ronald Medrano Williams headed an Alex Loeffelman corner kick off the left post during the 50th. In the 52nd minute, sophomore forward Mac Pridham headed left of goal on a feed from Medrano Williams. Collins fired high in the 56th minute before Pridham rolled a shot attempt across goal and wide during the 58th. Senior midfielder Evan Richter capped the Mustang onslaught during the 59th by firing to the right of goal.

New Mexico, a 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifier, countered during the 66th, but Mustang senior goalkeeper Patrick McLain stopped Lobos freshman forward James Rogers to earn his lone save of the night.

Cal Poly’s final scoring attempt during regulation time came in the 86th minute as junior forward Benny Estes played a pass through the right edge of the penalty area and on to Collins. Rodriguez, however, absorbed the ensuing collision with Collins and corralled the ground ball to cancel out the Mustang attack.

Junior midfielder Chris Gaschen had a chance to winthe game for Cal Poly during the first overtime, but his attempt skimmed the New Mexico crossbar. During the second overtime, sophomore forward Ian Clark had a shot two minutes into the period stopped by Rodriguez before Pridham, four minutes from time, found free space on the left wing only to fire wide. Montgomery finished the match by curling a shot wide in the 107th minute.
