Cal State Bakersfield men defeat Cal State Fullerton

October 4, 2009
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal State Bakersfield(m) men’s soccer team earned its third consecutive victory and surpassed its win total for each of the past two seasons with a 2-1 decision over Cal State Fullerton Saturday on the Main Soccer Field.

The Roadrunners used one goal in each half to move to 5-3-1 overall, while the Titans fell to 4-5-1, dropping their third straight.

Bakersfield dominated play early, earning an 8-3 shot advantage through the opening 45 minutes of play. Just three minutes after substituting into the match, Robbie Gouk broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season. Freshman Jesus Sanchez slotted a ball across the top of the box to Gouk, who struck it past goalkeeper Pablo Gonzales into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 CSUB lead at the 35:39 mark.

A brief letdown to open the second half allowed Cal State Fullerton’s Jesse Escalante a shot just 16 second in, but goalkeeper Eric Shannon came up with a diving save to keep the Titans off the board.

Fullerton finally broke through in the 74th minute with a goal by Shay Spitz. The play began with a turnover deep in the Titan’s own end. Jamal Farquharson came up with a loose ball following a Roadrunner cross into the box. The speedy forward broke free from the pack and, catching the CSUB back line on its heels, raced the full length of the field. After reaching the endline, left of the goal, he chipped the ball back in front of the goalmouth where Spitz headed it just inside the left post, knotting the score 1-1.

Undeterred, and looking to remain perfect on their home pitch, the Roadrunner responded less than four minutes later when Matt Shaxton won a 50-50 ball near the top of the box, beat a Titan defender and drove a shot into the far-post net for the game-winner.

Bakersfield concluded with a slight 14-12 shot advantage, but forced Gonzales to make six saves, while Shannon faced just three shots on goal, saving two.

The Roadrunners conclude non-conference action, and their current three-match homestand, Saturday, Oct. 10, against Cal Poly. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the Main Soccer Field.
