Campbell and Virginia Tech play to 1-1 draw

October 11, 2011
BLACKSBURG, VA. – Campbell outshot Virginia Tech 7-1 in 20 minutes of overtime play Tuesday night at Thompson Field, but settled for a 1-1 draw with the Hokies. Brian Urioste scored in the first half for Campbell (5-6-2), while Tech equalized on a 70th-minute own goal. Campbell finished with a 23-11 advantage in shots, 9-3 in attempts on target. Ethan Hall made two saves in the Camel nets, while Kyle Renfro had eight stops for the Hokies. The contest marked Campbell’s third-straight overtime match following last week’s 1-0 win over NC State and Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Presbyterian. Campbell (5-6-2) improved to 1-0-1 against Atlantic Coast Conference members this year and 4-4-1 vs. ACC schools since the start of the 2006 season. Campbell nearly scored in the first OT period as the Camels launched three shots in the first 3:35, forcing a pair of Renfro saves; then Nick Burdett his the post in the 95th minute. Travis Golden’s header off a Mitchell Cardenas corner kick stayed high after 103 minutes of play. Cardenas missed wide in the 108th. Renfro saved Ricki Gaez’ attempt for a Camel corner kick in the 109th minute, but the Hokies (3-8-1) cleared the ball. Virginia Tech’s lone shot during extra time came with only 18 seconds remaining when Mike Wilkie’s effort stayed high. Virginia Tech, which knocked off top-ranked North Carolina 1-0 in double OT on Sept. 10, ended a six-match losing streak, but has not won since a 1-0 decision against Longwood three days later. During Tech’s seven-match winless stretch, the Hokies have dropped three contests against nationally-ranked opponents. The Camels took the lead in the 20th minute when Urioste controlled a clearance at the top of the box, then hit a shot into the top corner of the net inside the far post. The goal was the first of the year for the senior from Bethesda, Md., and the second of his career. Virginia Tech failed to get any of its three shots on target in the first half as the Camels out-shot the Hokies 9-3 over the first 45 minutes. The Hokies went 35:03 without a shot between Ben Strong’s miss in the 31st minute and Jeremy Williams’ effort in the 66th that went high. In the 69th minute James Shupp’s effort beat Hall, but was cleared out of danger. But just 1:10 later, the Hokies drew level when a clearance from close range took a deflection and found the CU net. Virginia Tech nearly went ahead after 76 minutes when Mikey Minutillo hit the post. Renfro saved Cardenas’ shot in the 83rd minute and Jhuvon Francis missed wide on the 86-minute mark. The Hokies earned two late corner kicks, but Minutillo’s header with 48 seconds to play in regulation stayed high of Hall’s cross bar. At the end of regulation, Campbell held a 16-11 advantage in shots, 6-4 in attempts on target. Tuesday’s match was the first in men’s soccer between Virginia Tech and Campbell in over 45 years. On Sept. 28, 1966, the Hokies defeated the Camels 3-2 in Blacksburg. Campbell stands 26-7-4 in its last 37 games during the month of October. In those contests, CU has out-scored its October competition by a 73-43 margin. The Camels play the third of four-straight matches on the road when they return to Big South action Saturday at Winthrop (7:00).
