Campbell defeats Liberty 3-1 for third-straight Big South win

October 25, 2011
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Mitchell Cardenas scored twice and set up another goal to lead Campbell to a 3-1 Big South Conference men’s soccer victory over Liberty Tuesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Campbell (8-6-2, 4-2 Big South) extended its league winning streak to three matches and is now unbeaten (3-0-1) in its last four outings. Liberty (7-6-1, 2-4-1) lost its second-straight contest and fell to 1-5-1 over its last seven outings. The Camels improved to 5-1-1 in the month of October and out-shot their opponent for the seventh game in a row. Campbell jumped in front with a pair of early goals. In the 16th minute, Cardenas finished a Campbell counter attack with a right-footed blast from 30 yards for his third strike of the season. Keegan Terry and Jonathan Ray linked passes to the junior from Mexico City. Just 1:57 later, Cardenas’ serve was headed in by Jhuvon Francis for the Jamaican freshman’s third goal of the year. In the 21st minute, Liberty forward Darren Amoo turned at the top of the area and struck a heavy low shot, but Camel keeper Ethan Hall held on for the save. Francis nearly added another goal in the 41st minute, but a reaction save by Liberty keeper Scott Sutarik kept the margin at two. Just 1:44 into the second half, the Flames cut the margin in half. Uriah Bentick sent a left-footed effort from near the end line that snuck under the cross bar at the far post for his third goal of the year. Cardenas added an insurance goal, his fourth of the season, in the 61st minute when he stole the ball deep in the Liberty end, dribbled to goal and toe-poked a shot by Sutarik. Ray nearly added another tally for the Camels on an 84th-minute break down the left side, but Sutarik dove to his left to deflect the shot and Francis’ follow sailed just wide of the left post. Campbell finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots, 8-5 in shots on goal. Sutarik finished with 5 saves, while Camel keeper Ethan Hall had four on the night. Tuesday’s result ended a string of six-straight matches between Campbell and Liberty that had been decided by one goal or ended in a draw. The Camels moved into sole possession of third place in the Big South standings with 12 points through six matches. Campbell improved to 3-3-1 at home this year and has won its last three games at the Eakes Complex. Since the start of the 2005 campaign, Campbell owns a 38-19-2 record at home. Not only does CU stand 5-1-1 in its last seven matches, but the Camels have out-shot their opponents by a 156-81 margin in those games. Campbell has out-shot its five Big South opponents by a 135-66 margin, 67-30 in shots on goal. Liberty has not scored more than once in a match since a 2-1 victory Sept. 27 at High Point Campbell has compiled a record of 29-7-4 in its last 40 games during the month of October (including a 4-1-1 mark this season). In those 39 contests, the Camels have out-scored their foes by an 82-47 margin. The Camels host VMI Saturday (5:00 p.m.) in the final regular season home game for seniors Nick Burdett and Brian Urioste. CU will also present its Jim McVeigh (most promising freshman) and Glen Brewster Memorial (leadership & courage) awards during pre-match ceremonies.
