Campbell men fall to Davidson

September 8, 2010
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Alex Caskey scored the game’s lone goal in the 43rd minute to lift Davidson to a 1-0 men’s soccer victory Tuesday night over visiting Campbell.

Ranked eighth in this week’s South Region poll, Davidson (2-0-1) finished with a 13-7 edge in shots over the Camels (0-1-2), who have not allowed more than one goal through three matches.

The Wildcats broke through in the 43rd minute when CU keeper Ryan Amons saved a shot from Peter Shelton, but Caskey knocked in the rebound for his first goal of the season.

Thursday’s match was CU’s third-straight against a school ranked regionally, following draws with Loyola (Md.) and Richmond.

Davidson finished with a 13-7 edge in shots, 9-2 in shots on target.  Campbell threatened twice in the last 10 minutes, but Justin Franz’ 82nd minute shot was blocked and Ben York’s 86th minute attempt sailed wide.

Amons tied his career high with 8 saves.  Chip Sanders recorded his first shutout of the year by making two saves in the Wildcat nets.

Davidson took a 6-5 lead in the all-time series, which dates to 1963, Campbell’s first varsity season.

In addition to Davidson, Campbell will face UNC Greensboro, Applachian State and Furman from the SoCon during the 2010 season.

Campbell returns to action on Wed., Sept. 15 at home vs. UNC Wilmington in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
