Cardinals can't cool Brown, Gustavus
Box Score | GameDay Preview
ST. PETER, Minn. — Early Tuesday afternoon, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named Gustavus' Zach Brown the conference's player of the week, after the GAC sophomore scored all three Gustie goals last week in wins over Wartburg and Saint John's.
Later that afternoon, Brown was at it again — much to the dismay of the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team.
Brown proved why he was the reigning MIAC player of the week, scoring the Gusties' first two goals in leading Gustavus to a 3-0 MIAC victory over the Cardinals.
The Cardinals, who equaled a season high with three goals in a 3-2 win over Bethel on Saturday, could not get their offense on track against Gustavus.
And while the GAC defense, spearheaded by goalkeepers Brett Ylonen and Braden Schmid, was stymying the Cardinals, Brown gave the Gusties all the offense they would need — scoring in the 13th and 33rd minutes to give Gustavus a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Konnor Tranoris rounded out the scoring for the league-leading Gusties (3-0-1 MIAC, 7-1-1 overall), beating SMU goalkeeper Christian Van Dam (Linovia, Mich.) eight minutes into the second half.
Van Dam stopped a career-high eight shots in goal for the Cardinals, while Ylonen made three saves in 66 minutes and Schmid stopped the only shot he faced over the final 24 minutes.
The Cardinals (1-3-0 MIAC, 3-6-0 overall) return home after four straight road games on Saturday, hosting Concordia in a 3 p.m. conference contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
