WINONA, Minn. — In 17 games last season, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team scored more than two goals in a game once.

In their season opener against Edgewood Friday night, the Cardinals eclipsed that mark — in the first half.

Fueled by that three-goal first period, the Cardinals kicked off their season on a high note, holding off the Eagles 3-2 at Ochrymowycz Field.

Midhat Mujic (Rochester, Minn.) — playing his first game in a Cardinal uniform — made his presence felt, scoring twice in an 11-minute stretch in the game's opening 45 minutes.

Jordan Sinkfield (St. Paul, Minn.) netted his first goal as a Cardinal to give SMU an early 1-0 advantage, before Mujic sandwiched his two goals around a tally by Edgewood's Thini Messan to give SMU a 3-1 advantage at the halftime break.

Edgewood's Andrew Aunt cut the gap to 3-2 with a goal 19 minutes into the second half, but that was as close as the Eagles would get.

Christian Van Dam (Livonia, Mich.) and Dontae Gillespie (Naperville, Ill.) shared the goalkeeper duties for the Cardinals, with Van Dam stopped three shots in the first half, while Gillespie equaled that feat in the second half.

SMU (1-0 overall) returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Dubuque, Iowa, for a nonconference game against Loras.
