Carthage Blanks Centenary
WASHINGTON, N.J. – Carthage stormed out to a 3-0 first-half lead and never looked back as it handed the Centenary College women's soccer team a 4-0 defeat in the Cyclone Kickoff Classic during both teams' season openers Friday afternoon.
Rachel Post got the Lady Reds on the board in the fifth minute, beating Cyclones' junior goalkeeper Megan Williams (Glenside, Pa./Abington) from 10 yards out.
Corrine Brennan and Jessica Socha added first-half tallies to put Carthage in front 3-0 after 45 minutes. Post sent a crossing pass to Monica Rosenberger, who deposited it in the net late in the second half to account for the final score.
Williams made eight stops in net, while playing all 90 minutes and senior midfielder Kelley Jane Carvalho (Roselle, N.J./Roselle Catholic) accounted for the Cyclones' lone shot on goal.
Carthage goalie Michelle Balcerzak made one save in relief of starter Abby Alm, while Post recorded a game-high three shots on goal.
Centenary looks to get into the win column on Saturday in the Cyclone Kickoff Classic finale against Drew at Warren Hills High School (4:00 pm). The Rangers rallied for a 5-4 triumph against Elizabethtown earlier Friday.
