Catlett, Panthers Knock Off No. 18 Ashland

September 19, 2011
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Thanks to a pair of goals from junior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) and a strong defensive effort in the second half, the Ohio Dominican men''s soccer team upset conference rival and No. 18 Ashland Friday night at Panther Field. With the win, the Panthers (2-1-0, 1-0-0 GLIAC) were able to avenge a pair of shutout losses and a heartbreaking GLIAC Championship final to the Eagles last season and match its one previous win against Ashland back in 2007. Catlett wasted little time giving ODU the early lead as just 2:54 had elapsed as he took a couple of dribbles and ripped a low shot from the top of the box from 17 yards deep for his second score of the year. Just under eight minutes later in the 11th minute, the Eagles (2-3-1, 1-2-1 GLIAC) found the equalizer as Andrew Iden connected on a header off a corner kick by Patrick Pearson. The score remained tied up until the 60:31 mark as the Panthers hurriedly got to a throw-in on the near side and with the Ashland defense caught off guard, Catlett was able nail his second goal of the evening to the far post from the far left wing 18. The ODU defense took over the rest of the way as it held the Eagles to just three second-half shots and zero corners, while finishing with a 20-10 overall shots advantage and 8-3 edge on corners, including 7-0 in the last frame. Sophomore Dean Dziewit (Waterford, MI) picked up his second win in goal allowing just the one score and turning aside two shots. The Panthers hit the road for the first time this season this Sunday, Sept. 18 as ODU heads to conference leader Lake Erie for a 4:30 p.m. start. Contact: Bryan Desch deschb@ohiodominican.edu
