Sophomore Georgia Waddle (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored the game-winning goal in extra time giving NU a win in the first game of the year for any Wildcat team.

Midway through overtime, NU had a corner kick opportunity that set up the game-winner. Junior Nicole Jewell (Raleigh, N.C./Leesvile Road) took the corner from the right side, sending it into the box. After an initial attempt by the Wildcats, Waddle was there for the rebound, sending it past Kansas goalkeeper Kat Liebetrau on the left side, ending the game at the 94:25 mark. Sophomore Jackie Alyinovich (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale South) was credited with an assist.

Sunday’s win also is the first Northwestern win for head coach Michael Moynihan who is in his first season with the program. Kansas, an NCAA Tournament team in 2011, drops to 1-1-0 on the year after winning its season-opener in overtime Friday.

In regulation, Northwestern wasted little time getting on the board, as NU’s leading goal scorer the last two seasons, junior Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne), found the back of the net at the 4:54 mark. The Jayhawks controlled the ball for the opening minutes but sophomore K.K. Barr (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) gained possession for the Wildcats, dribbling up the left side of the field before crossing over to Allen who scored with a shot from the middle of the box.

The Wildcats’ defense kept Kansas off the board in the first half, stopping eight Jayhawk shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Cassell (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) had her work cut out for her in the first half, saving five looks, while the NU defenders also blocked two Kansas shots.

After the break, Kansas scored the equalizer within the first five minutes of the second half. Ashley Williams scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Caroline Kastor at the 48:42 mark.

Both teams kept attacking in the second as NU had five shots compared to 12 for Kansas, including one that hit the crossbar. Northwestern defended the Jayhawks’ set pieces well, especially in the final 30 seconds as Kansas had two corner kick opportunities with the clock winding down.

Northwestern finished with 11 shots, five on goal, compared to 20 looks, six on goal, for Kansas. Niki Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led NU with three shots while Allen and Barr had two each. Cassell finished the game with five saves while Liebetrau had three.

Northwestern heads back on the road next weekend, facing Miami (Ohio) Friday, Aug. 24 and Dayton, Sunday, Aug. 26.

••••••

Be the first to know what's going on with the 'Cats -- Follow @NU_Sports on Twitter, become a fan of Northwestern Athletics on Facebook! and subscribe to the NU Sports Express e-newsletter to receive the latest news, schedule updates and video and to interact with NU.
