CC Claims Share of Conference USA Lead
Colorado College used a goal by senior forward Brittney Lyman and four second-half saves by senior goalkeeper Hanna Berglund to claim a share of the Conference USA lead with a 1-0 victory at Rice University on Sunday afternoon in Houston.
The Tigers improved to 12-3-4 overall and 7-2-1 in C-USA, and are tied with the Owls atop the conference standings with 22 points. Rice slipped to 10-6-3 overall.
“We're very pleased,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “It's never easy to go on the road and win in this conference. To win two games on the road this weekend, it was a great result for us. Our players are a little sore and a little tired, but they feel pretty good.”
Lyman scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute, dribbling through a pair of defenders on the right side before slotting a low shot inside the left post. It was her second game winner of the season and the seventh of her career.
Berglund made all four of her saves in the second half when Rice outshot CC, 13-4. She improved to 8-1-0 with her fourth shutout of the season, three of which were by 1-0 scores.
The Owls finished with a 23-7 edge in total shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
“They had us pinned in, but our players were really resilient,” Bennett said. “If you look at the stats, they are a bit deceiving. Both teams only had four shots on goal, but they had more corners than we did.”
Colorado College can clinch its first-ever crown and top seed in the upcoming C-USA Tournament with a victory at UTEP in the regular-season finale on Friday night.
