CCSU Plays to 0-0 Draw at Army in Season Opener
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team played to a 0-0 double overtime draw on the road at Army on Friday night. The game was the season opener for CCSU. A crowd of 2,000 fans saw the two teams play to the draw in West Point, NY.
Sophomore Nikola Deiter led the Blue Devils on the night, making an impressive 14 saves to record her first shutout of the season. She had six shutouts as a freshman in 2010.
Army outshot the Blue Devils 14-5 in the first half, including 4-1 in shots on goal. Deiter stopped all four shots before the break.
The Blue Devils had five shots on goal in the second half, but Army keeper Monica Lee stopped them all as the team's went to the first overtime. The Blue Devils had a pair of shots in the two extra frames, but neither of them were on goal.
Deiter was strong in the two overtimes, stopping four shots, all in the second overtime, to preserve the scoreless tie.
Central is now 0-0-1 on the season. The Black Knights are 1-1-1.
The Blue Devils return to action next Friday night at Yale vs. Providence at 5 p.m. This Sunday's game at UConn has been canceled due to Hurricane Irene.
