Centenary Tops Neumann 2-1 In CSAC Opener

September 23, 2013

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – For the seventh-straight season, Centenary College won its Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer opener as the Cyclones topped Neumann 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Morrison Field

Since joining the CSAC in 2007, Centenary (1-5-1, 1-0 CSAC) is a perfect 7-0 in its league opening matches. The Cyclones also ended a four-match losing streak to the Knights (1-7, 0-2 CSAC).

Neumann netted the lone score of the first half as Alexa Rose blasted home a free kick from 20 yards away during the 18th minute.

The Cyclones regrouped and tallied the game's tying goal just over eight minutes into the second half. Junior forward Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./Gilboa-Conesville) got behind the defense and slid the ball past Knights' goalkeeper Briana King. Both of Potter's goals this fall have been game-tying, second-half scores.

Sophomore Becky D'Angelo (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) put Centenary in front 11 minutes later. A lead pass from junior Becky Camp (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) put D'Angelo one-on-one with King and D'Angelo found the back of the cage for her first goal.

Six of the Cyclones' eight shots on goal came during the second half. Centenary also recorded six corner kicks, compared to three for the Knights.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Williams (Glenside, Pa./Abington) made two saves, earning her first victory of the fall, while King blocked six shots.

Centenary opens a week-long road trip at Rosemont Wednesday beginning at 4:00 pm.
