Centre defeats Austin 4-0 in Komen Game V

October 7, 2011

The Colonels got a hat trick from Josh Settle and posted their second 4-0 win in as many games, defeating Austin College in Komen Game V on Friday in Sherman, Tex.

The game was the fifth in the Komen series, which began in 2007 when former Centre player and assistant Mark Hudson was named head coach at Austin. Austin won this year's fundraising competition, and to date the teams have raised a combined $32,000 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Settle, a junior midfielder from Bowling Green, Ky., scored four minutes into the game on an assist from Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) to give the Colonels the lead for good. Centre was able to pull away as he added another goal on an assist from Cameron Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) in the 28th minute, and he scored the final goal of the day early in the second half off a Jeremy Carlson (Seattle, Wash.) header. With the three goals, Settle now ranks second on the team with five for the season.

Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) scored the Colonels' other goal, connecting on a header off an Austin Greer (Bowling Green, Ky.) corner kick in the 43rd minute to give Centre a 3-0 halftime lead.

"I am glad to see Settle get back to his scoring ways," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "And Ben's header was a cracker. Great goals."

Senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made six saves in posting the shutout, which was his second straight and sixth in seven games. Austin took 18 shots to Centre's 15, including a 11-4 edge in the second half after falling behind. Centre held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

"I am really happy with our team defense," Burch added. "Carlson, (Brian) Fay, (Robbe) Tarver, (Will) Frentz and Jackson are really starting to come into their own. It is our team defense that will get us into the SCAC Tournament."

With the win, the Colonels improve to 7-3-1 overall on the season with a 2-1 record in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Austin drops to 4-5-2 overall with a 1-2 mark in the SCAC.

Centre wraps up its Texas road trip at University of Dallas on Sunday at 3 p.m.
