Centre falls to Baldwin Wallace in second overtime

September 11, 2011

The Colonels jumped out to an early lead but were unable to hold on, eventually dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Baldwin-Wallace in the second overtime period in the 22nd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic on Saturday.

It was only nine minutes into the match when Robbe Tarver (Houston, Tex.) scored his first goal of the season on an assist by Jack Goblirsch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) to give Centre a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Colonels, however, it would be the only time they would find the net. Centre was able to create several chances, outshooting Baldwin-Wallace 16-8, striking the post twice in the first half and the crossbar early in the second half, but couldn't quite break through.

Baldwin-Wallace may not have put together as many chances, but was able to pull even in the 60th minute when Sean Maloney scored off a corner kick by Andrew Thompson.

After a flurry of activity as regulation wound down, including a sprawling save by Baldwin-Wallace keeper Ryan Hullings just before time ran out, the teams went to overtime tied at one goal each. Eventually Baldwin-Wallace's Carlin Vandendriessche, collected a loose ball in front of Centre's goal and punched in the game winner.

"What is disappointing about this game is that we failed to do any of the things we want to do each game," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch following the loss. "We are frustrated three of our four team goals are controllable. We can't give ourselves a passing grade in any of the four things we focus on as a team."

Hulings went on to finish with six saves while Centre goalkeeper Zach Sosnovich (Woodbridge, N.J.) had one.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 2-2 on the year and will look to get back on track next Saturday at Wabash.

"We are a bit behind right now,," Burch added. "And we will once again look to our seniors to push the group forward."
