Charlotte men play UNC Greensboro to draw
September 28, 2009
GREENSBORO, NC - Andres Cuero and Charles Rodriguez score their first goals of the season as the Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team (4-1-2) tied UNC Greensboro, 2-2, in a game that was stopped in the 75th minute due to unplayable conditions. After the 70th minute, a game is considered official.
"This was two very good teams battling during very tough playing conditions," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "For the entire second half, the field had standing water. We gave up an early goal and then we battled back and tied the game in the first half. We continued to play strong in the second half. UNC Greensboro scored a go ahead goal. We came right back and tied the score. Then, a minute later we were ready to take a corner kick and the referee called the game due to unplayable field. I thought that both teams played good soccer in impossible conditions."
UNC Greensboro took the early lead when Thomas Campbell headed in a Mike Magnotic cross in the third minute.
Charlotte had several chances to tie the score over the next 27 minutes but shots by Adam Gross, Evan James and Jason Hawes were either stopped or went wide of the goal.
In the 31st minute, Cuero headed a Luke Exley free kick into the near post tying the score, 1-1. Cuero’s goal was his eighth career goal.
UNC Greensboro regained the lead when Campbell scored his second goal of the game when he scored on a shot from 12 yards out on a Matt Foxx assist in the 69th minute.
In the 74th minute, Rodriguez scored the game-tying goal on a bicycle kick off a Jennings Rex assist. Rodriguez’s goal was the first of his career.
Rodriguez’s goal came at the right time for the 49ers since the game was called just over a minute later.
The 49ers finished the game with a 16-10 advantage in shots. Gross and James paced the 49ers with four shots apiece. While, Donnie Smith added three shots to the 49ers attack. Cuero tallied two shots for the 49ers.
Charlotte returns to action when they battle #6 Wake Forest on the road in Winston-Salem, Tuesday, September 29 at 7 pm.
