CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men’s soccer team picked-up its first victory of the year in style, shutting out Evansville, 2-0, to conclude action at the Bearcat Soccer Classic. The victory gave UC a second-place finish in the tournament.

Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) made his first career start in goal and posted the shutout, stopping all six Purple Ace shots on goal. Evansville out-shot the Bearcats, 17-9, in the match and had several scoring chances late in the match.

UC got its offense going early, with Alan Rovira (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley/Tyler JC), scoring his first goal as a Bearcat in the 11th minute. The junior redirected a corner from Jonathan Cottrell (Dubai, UAE/Dubai College) to find the back of the net inside the near post and give UC the 1-0.

The Bearcat attack didn’t rest, pushing the lead to 2-0 just three minutes later. Ashani Walker (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College) settled the ball at the top of the box and started a give-and-go with Will Diebold (Coppell, Texas/Jesuit College Prep). Diebold took the dump from Walker just inside the 18’ and with his back to the goal, rolled it towards the net for Walker who converted.

After that, it was up to the UC backs and Gill to seal the victory. UE took 12 shots in the second half, putting four of those on net, but could not get on the scoreboard. The Bearcats last recorded a clean sheet on Oct. 3 of last season in a 0-0 draw with USF.

Saint Louis won the Bearcat Soccer Classic after posting a 1-0, double-overtime decision over Northern Illinois in Sunday’s first match. UC and Evansville both went 1-1, with the Bearcats taking the runner-up spot by virtue of the win over the Purple Aces. Northern Illinois went 0-2, suffering a pair of overtime losses on the week.

The All-Tournament team featured SLU’s Francisco Vizciaino, Julian Gieseke, Tyler David and Kingsely Bryce; Gill, Waker and Rovira from UC; Evansville’s Fike Hajderovic and Jared Robinson and NIU’s Andrew Glaeser and Cody Witkowski.

UC will look to keep it rolling when they hit the road next weekend at SIU Edwardsville on Friday, Sept. 13. That contest is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.
