Cincinnati Dominates Crosstown Rival Xavier

The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team blanked crosstown rival Xavier, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats, who are 5-1-2 through its first eight matches, are off to the program's best start since 2002 when they went 6-1-1.

The pace of play was controlled all match by UC as they outshot Xavier, 31-1, and garnered 10 corners with XU not taking any.

It didn't take long for the Bearcats (5-1-2) to punish the Musketeers (3-5-1) for their mistakes as Jae Atkinson scored the eventual game-winning goal just two minutes into the match on a penalty kick following a handball in the 18-yard box.

Taylor Jackson extended Cincinnati's lead to 2-0 late in the match as she tallied a goal in the 77th minute.

Atkinson was granted a penalty kick after XU had a handball in the box. The senior stepped up and struck the ball into the upper right corner. CIN 1, XU 0

CIN - Taylor Jackson (Katy Couperus, Natalie Coury), 77th
Coury threw the ball in quickly to Couperus from the right side. The sophomore dribbled to the near post until the goalkeeper met her at the six-yard box. She then passed the ball to the face of the goal where Jackson made a sliding shot. CIN 2, XU 0

MATCH NOTES
- UC, who is 5-1-2 through its first eight matches, is off to the program's best start since 2002 when they went 6-1-1.
- The Bearcats improve to 23-6-0 all-time against Xavier, and they are 6-1-0 in the last seven matches. In five of UC's last six matches against the Musketeers, they have shut them out five times.
- Cincinnati hasn't allowed a goal at Gettler Stadium in 291 minutes and 48 seconds.
- Couperus has notched at least one point in six of the Bearcats' eight matches this season. She currently sits second on the team in points with 10.
- Coury recorded the first point of her career with an assist on Jackson's second half goal.

NEXT MATCH
The Bearcats have a short week as they travel to Chicago, Illinois to face nationally ranked DePaul on Thursday, Sept. 18. The Blue Demons are undefeated on the year (7-0-1) and were ranked No. 21/18 this past week.
